Mel Bay Presents the Light Crust Doughboys Songbook
Published in Paperback by Mel Bay Publications (June, 1999)
Authors: Marvin Montgomery and Art Greenhaw
Average review score:

Words, Music, Sound and History All-In-One
As the Texas Legislature said in 1995, The Light Crust Doughboys have always been regarded as one of the country's most precious natural resources. But fans and critics more and more are recognizing the band as the seminal group it is: just as Bill Monroe is to bluegrass, and Robert Johnson is to the blues, so are The Light Crust Doughboys to Texas-style country and western swing. This unique collection explores many of the band's Doughboy originals both in secular and gospel music. Smokey Montgomery, fast becoming heralded around the world as the tenor banjo's greatest master, edited and compiled this collecton along with his disciple, the Texas Renaissance Man, Art Greenhaw. This is a must-have for anyone who wants to see how Texas country music is so much different from Nashville country, and you can explore the soul and feeling of a band that doesn't overdub, synthesize, or homogenize. The Light Crust Doughboys, the world's longest-lived country band, are bound for eternal fame like Scott Joplin and Stephen Foster and Irving Berlin, and now we can have a rare listen and sing-along to uncovered gems of Americana through this Mel Bay classic. Western swing is a synthesis of blues, gospel, rural fiddle music, big band, and much more. This is the lab band where western swing was invented in the 1930s, and here's how it's perfected in the 1990s with this contemporary Doughboy collection (along with a few amazing tracks from the 1940s). Where is The Country Music Hall of Fame when we need 'em to induct The Light Crust Doughboys?! Let's mount a campaign for The Light Crust Doughboys NOW!!

Mind Renewal in a Mindless Age: Preparing to Think and Act Biblically: A Study of Romans 12:1-2
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (August, 1993)
Author: James Montgomery Boice
Average review score:

A Pleasing Beginning to Romans 12:1-2
This is a relatively short study, but Dr. Boice hits the nail on the proverbial head with this book, as it relates to the whys and wherefores of Romans 12:1-2, where the Scripture teaches us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind. It's a good beginning, but not a comprehensive one, and for the concept, it's an excellent start. He focuses on keeping the mind sharp and Christ-centered, always stressing that our minds should be open to the Spirit of God by way of the Word of God teaching us what our minds should hold. This is not a confrontational or controversial approach, but an intelligent overview of a much needed study in today's church. Recommended.

The Minor Prophets: Hosea-Jonah
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (April, 2002)
Author: James Montgomery Boice
Average review score:

Pastoral and highly practical for modern Christians
James Montgomery Boice was ushered into glory on June 2000. But he left legacy of godliness and passion for God's word. His books are pastoral at heart, therefore his books while scholastic, are never dry or devoid of practicality.
1. His books (3 vols, Unabridged 1 volume edition is also available via Kregel Publisher) on "The Minor Prophets" are amazingly challenging and powerful. This is not simply a commentary. This book connects the message of Minor Prophets (Hosea to Malachi) to today's world, thus making this book highly applicable and challenging to God's people. He addresses modern danger of materialism, syncretism, self-reliance, and modern idolatry in Christian churches.
2. He properly captures the heart of the message of Minor Prophets without cluttering with technical jargons. He emphasizes how God's people can break God's heart by their sins despite God's overwheling love for them. Then he applies that truth to current Christendom at large, calling for honest self-examination and determined repentance from Christian idolatry and sins.
3. He has made the message of Minor Prophets undestandable to ALL Christians by making it simple. It is simple, because it is sermonic in nature.

Those who read the Minor Prophets in the Bible will do well with this James Montgomery's book. You will be edified and challenged and ultimately understand God's message to His people.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott (Cornerstones of Freedom Series)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (March, 1994)
Authors: Conrad R. Stein and R. Conrad Stein
Average review score:

Rosa Parks gives birth to the Civil Rights Movement
When I first heard in 1996 that Rosa Parks was being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom I was shocked to learn that this particular honor had not been bestowed on the Mother of the Civil Rights movement decades earlier. In R. Conrad Stein's story of "The Montgomery Bus Boycott" for the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series, young readers will learn the circumstances of that fateful day of December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, where the 42-year old seamstress refused to move to the back of the bus. They will learn how three other women has been jailed that year for failing to surrender their seats to white passengers, but that this time things would be different. Community leader E. D. Nixon organized a successful one-day boycott of the buses that proved so successful it was organized into a long-term struggle to desegregate the buses in Montgomery. It was at that point that a 27-year old minister, new to town, named Martin Luther Ling, Jr. became involved. King becomes the central figure for the rest of the book, which tells of the successful campaign waged by after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Jim Crow laws regarding segregated seating on buses. Students will find this book very informative about the times and the people involved in this pivotal event in American History (e.g., Parks paid a $10 fine for her crime). I have found the "Cornerstones of Freedom" books to be uniformly so across the line.

Montgomery, NY
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (15 September, 1999)
Author: Robert L., III Williams
Average review score:

Appreciation for local history.
I brought this book last winter. I have read it several times since. I have to admit I am biased, I am quite familiar with the area Mr. Williams wrote about. I have brought several copies for family members. Mr. Williams did an excellent job describing the history of the area and in doing so makes the reader realize it is our responsibility to keep the past from disappearing. Every developer and real estate agent should be forced to read it. Then maybe, they wouldn't be so eager to destroy, what history has left behind for us. Mr. Williams brought old buildings and their inhabitants back to life.
